Heat treatment of steel mainly includes annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering, heating, heat preservation, cooling in a certain medium, that is a process to control part's performance by changing the surface or internal structure of the metal material.


The main purpose of heat treatment after cold heading forming of fasteners is to obtain good mechanical property by quenching and tempering. Heat the steel to the critical temperature Ac3 (hypoeutectoid steel) or Ac1 (hypereutectoid steel) above the temperature (30 50 degree ), and hold for a period of time. Heating temperature and holding time are the key factors for quenching. When define the initial cooling temperature of quenching , factors such as carbon content, alloy elements, workpiece size and shape, heating mode, quenching medium and original structure should be considered comprehensively. Holding time includes the heating time, diathermanous time and organizational transformation time. The length of holding time is related to the amount of furnace, furnace type, workpiece size, steel composition and technical requirements. Commonly used quenching cooling media is water, oil, molten salt and molten alkali, etc.

Tempering heat treatment is to heat quenched parts to an appropriate temperature below the lower critical temperature Ac1 and cool to room temperature in the medium such as air or water or oil after holding for a period of time.


According to the different performance requirements of the workpiece, tempering temperature is different,it can be divided into the following kinds of tempering:


1. Low-temperature tempering (150-250 degree ), the internal structure obtained by low-temperature tempering is tempered martensite. Its purpose is to reduce the quenching stress and brittleness of hardened steel on the premise of maintaining its high hardness and high wear resistance, so as to avoid cracking or premature damage during use.


2. Tempering at medium temperature (350-500 degree ), the internal structure obtained by tempering at medium temperature is tempered troostite. The purpose is to obtain high yield strength, elastic limit and high toughness.


3. High-temperature tempering (500-650 degree ), high-temperature tempering of internal structure istempered sorbate. Generally, the heat treatment combined with quenching and tempering is called quenching and tempering. Its purpose is to obtain good comprehensive mechanical properties of strength, hardness, plasticity and toughness. The purpose of tempering is to eliminate or reduce stress, prevent deformation or cracking; Stable structure, stable shape and size, ensure accuracy; Adjust strength, hardness, plasticity, toughness and other mechanical properties.
